Portraits, 2006

Portraits and selfportraits are among the main subjects of Materka's works. The two presented here - Bartek's selfportrait and a portrait of his wife, Joanna - are the most mature and expressive works in the series of images formed out of letters, as if in ASCII code.

A painting from the "Hallucynogens" series. Deformed, rastered images of women's faces are an attempt at visualizing the sight distortions which may, for example, result from a very strong migraine.

One of many paintings depicting the artist's son - Tytus and, at the same time, one of his works with the characteristic "delaminatio" of colors, which resembles a TV broadcast with interferences or a faulty printout. A defect common in mechanically-produced images, was adapted here as a studied and deliberate effect.
