|Condoleezza Rice, 2005/2006|
oil, printing ink on canvas, 31 x 30 cm
Painting from a series in which a reproduction of and old painting or landscape photograph, placed in the lower part of the painting, is contrasted with the artist's interpretation of the motif
The work reveals the artist's interest, developed in future works, in painterly matter itself and the logic of its construction - brushstrokes, that decide of a painting's energy and expressive quality.
Sketches, painted directly on torn out pages from glossy magazines, most of them featuring portraits of women, are used by Matecki as working material, samples of arrangements and compositions used later in paintings. It is a peculiar laboratory of fascinating effects: overuse of paint on paper, various types of brushstrokes and deformations of photographed faces.
